All the Central and Northern Berg resorts are well within 60 minutes drive away and all offer the opportunity for a pleasant day enjoying the clean air, clean water and tranquility of the Drakensberg.

Close by is the magnificent Giants Castle section of the Drakensberg.

There is an easy walk along to the open air Bushman Museum with a tableau of San family life. For the more energetic, there is the hike to the top of the Drakensberg over Langalibalele Pass.

A more extended Drakensberg tour runs through Winterton, Phutadijaba and on to the Sentinel car park at 8,500ft.

An hour’s walk will take you to a saddle with a marvellous view across the upper Amphitheatre.

For those with a technical bent, there are tours of the Pump Storage Scheme at the top of Oliviershoek Pass.

Military types will be interested in a short run to Colenso, Spioenkop, Ladysmith and back past many sites of importance to the Voortrekkers and the second Anglo-Boer War.

A somewhat longer drive through Ladysmith to Dundee passes the battlefields of Elandslaagte and Talana. The Talana Museum on that battlefield is well worth a visit.

A very pretty run through rural Zulu country can be taken on the return, through Greytown (excellent museum too) and back via Mooi River.

Several day trips are needed to fully explore the Midlands Meander which extends both sides of the N3.

If you want some space for the kids to run round while you have a relaxing time, there are several dams with picnic facilities – Wagendrift, on our doorstep, Spioenkop Dam and Midmar, near Howick.
